Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone secreted primarily by the adrenal glands and, to a lesser extent, by the testes and ovaries. DHEA and its sulfate are the most abundant steroid hormones in the human body and can be found in blood, saliva, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. DHEA serves as a “buffer” reservoir to be used for the intracellular synthesis of various estrogens and androgens throughout the human body. DHEA production peaks during the second decade of life. Beginning in the early thirties, DHEA levels typically decline by 10% per decade associated with accelerated aging. Other possible causes of a decline in DHEA production may include inflammation, blood sugar imbalances, chronic and/or acute illnesses/emotional traumas and stress with long-term stress also contributing to increasing blood sugar generally.
DHEA functions as the counterpart to the stress hormone cortisol. Maintaining healthy DHEA levels is essential for balancing the catabolic (destruction) effects of cortisol. Each capsule provides 25 mg of DHEA derived from the wild yam, allowing for incremental oral supplementation and flexibility and helps support numerous hormone balancing and stress-fighting protocols.
Suggested Use: Please consult your Health Care Practioner before starting on any supplementation.
1 capsule per day for men age 40 or over or as recommended by your health care professional or best by bloodwork results of blood DHEAS levels which are recommended to be done at least yearly beginning at age 35-38 years. Ladies normally do not need so much DHEA daily as the female dose generally begins at 5 mg per day but may be 5 mg twice a day (and it is always preferable for women to take the skin cream form of DHEA) if bloodwork results from your physician indicate more DHEA is needed. Too much DHEA and the skin may demonstrate a pimple on the back or lower face which normally quickly goes away with decreasing or stopping DHEA and is usually just one pimple.
Men with age and stress (50 + years) may need to take 25 mg twice a day and ladies normally do not need more than 10-25 mg per day and always best to take ½ of that amount twice a day. Blood levels are always best to do yearly and often even with low DHEA some people cannot take DHEA for various reasons until later in life.
